Romans 4:3-11 “For what does the Scripture say? “Abraham believed God and it was accounted to him for righteousness." … (11) And he received the sign of circumcision, a seal of the righteousness of the faith which he had while still uncircumcised, that he might be the father of all those who believe, though they are uncircumcised, that righteousness might be imputed to them also.”
The scripture quoted above, teaches us that when Abraham believed God, it was accounted to him for righteousness. At that stage, as far as God was concerned, Abraham was righteous. He then subsequently received from God, the “sign” of circumcision, which was the “seal” of his righteousness which he had already received, by faith. And so, we can see from this passage that circumcision was the visible outward sign and seal that Abraham had, that he belonged to God.
