Genesis 3:17-18 “Then to Adam He said, "Because you have heeded the voice of your wife, and have eaten from the tree of which I commanded you, saying, 'You shall not eat of it': "Cursed is the ground for your sake; in toil you shall eat of it all the days of your life. (18) Both thorns and thistles it shall bring forth for you, and you shall eat the herb of the field.”
So why will God destroy this current earth? There are a number of reasons why, but one of the main reasons is because of His holiness. And so, in order for us to understand that concept we need to understand the holiness of God. Nothing that is defiled in any way, can ever be in the presence of God, for God is light and in Him is no darkness at all (1 John 1:5). That is why our defiled spirits are done away with through the new birth, and we receive new spirits born of the incorruptible seed of the word of God. And that is why our corruptible natural bodies will be done away with, and we will receive incorruptible spiritual bodies at the resurrection of the dead. For without that, no man can come into the presence of the Holy God. And so, that same principle also applies to this current earth, for as revealed in the passage of scripture quoted above, this earth has been defiled and cursed because of the sin of Adam. Therefore God will do away with this current earth and replace it with a new incorruptible earth.
Isaiah 24:4-6 “The earth mourns and fades away; the world languishes and fades away; the haughty people of the earth languish. (5) The earth is also defiled under its inhabitants, because they have transgressed the laws, Changed the ordinance, Broken the everlasting covenant. (6) Therefore, the curse has devoured the earth, and those who dwell in it are desolate. Therefore, the inhabitants of the earth are burned, and few men are left.”
The Holy Spirit through the prophet Isaiah again confirms the truth to us, that this current earth is defiled and cursed. And because this earth has been defiled, it is impossible for God to ever dwell on it. And so, God will do to the earth, that which He has done with His creation called man. He will destroy this current earth and create a new one, in which only righteousness dwells. For it is only then, that the Holy God can dwell on the earth in the presence of mankind.
