Angels in New Jerusalem

No evil shall befall you, nor shall any plague come near your dwelling; for He shall give His angels charge over you, to keep you in all your ways.

(Psalms 91:10-11)

I will conclude this series with a brief discussion about the role of angels in the age to come. Everyone born on the earth has at least one angel assigned to them by God. Jesus taught this truth when He spoke of the angels who watch over children, always beholding the face of our Father in heaven (Matthew 18:10). Once an angel is assigned to a child of God, that assignment remains in place for all eternity. The only way this assignment can be nullified is if those to whom they are assigned reject God’s salvation and are cast into hell at the end of their lives on earth.

As mentioned earlier, the saints will have their assigned angels dwelling with them and ministering to them in their residences in the New Jerusalem. How does this concept apply to the children of God who will reside in the new earth and to their offspring born to them? Regarding the assignment of angels to each child of God, nothing will change. Each one will continue to have an angel assigned to them, and for every new child born on the new earth, another angel will be assigned.

However, what will change in the age to come is the roles that angels perform. In the current age, one of the roles of angels is to protect the children of God from evil (Psalm 91:10). In the age to come, however, there will be no evil present, so angels will no longer be employed in this role. Another role they fulfil, as revealed in the above passage of Scripture, is to ensure that the children of God experience no mishaps, not even allowing them to stub their toe. Although this passage specifically refers to our Lord Jesus when He walked the earth, each angel of God will have the same mandate in the new earth. In other words, no child of God will even stub their toe in the new earth because their angels will prevent such incidents.

How will the angels accomplish this? They will do so in the same manner as they do today: in the unseen realm. Unlike in the New Jerusalem, where the saints and the angels of God will operate visibly in the same realm, in the new earth, the angels will continue to operate in the unseen realm. Thus, the children of God will not visibly see the angels around them ministering to them.

A more significant aspect of the angels’ ministry, however, is their role in influencing people to make decisions in line with God’s will (1 Kings 22:20). In this regard, the saints of God, who will always know God’s perfect will for their subjects, will direct the angels to influence the children of God accordingly. Concerning the reigning of the saints, the angels who minister in a specific geographic location will report to the angel assigned to the saint who reigns over that location. In this manner, the saint will rule over both the children of God and the angels of God in that location.
