The heavens will pass away – Part 2

Psalms 102:25-26 “Of old You laid the foundation of the earth, And the heavens are the work of Your hands. (26) They will perish, but You will endure; Yes, they will all grow old like a garment; Like a cloak You will change them, and they will be changed.”

In the previous section, we saw that God will completely destroy this current earth. But many of the scriptures we looked at, also mentioned that at the same time, that God would destroy the current heavens. In the above passage of scripture, the Holy Spirit confirms the truth for us, that when God destroys the earth that He will at the same time destroy the current heavens. So, what is the reason that God will destroy the heavens that now exist? As we saw in the previous section, one of the reasons that God will destroy the current earth is because it has been defiled by the sin of mankind.

Ezekiel 28:12-18 “Son of man, take up a lamentation for the king of Tyre, and say to him, 'Thus says the Lord God: "You were the seal of perfection, Full of wisdom and perfect in beauty. (13) You were in Eden, the garden of God; every precious stone was your covering: The sardius, topaz, and diamond, Beryl, onyx, and jasper, Sapphire, turquoise, and emerald with gold. The workmanship of your timbrels and pipes was prepared for you on the day you were created. (14) "You were the anointed cherub who covers; I established you; you were on the holy mountain of God; you walked back and forth in the midst of fiery stones. (15) You were perfect in your ways from the day you were created, till iniquity was found in you. (16) "By the abundance of your trading You became filled with violence within, and you sinned; Therefore, I cast you as a profane thing Out of the mountain of God; And I destroyed you, O covering cherub, From the midst of the fiery stones. (17) "Your heart was lifted up because of your beauty; you corrupted your wisdom for the sake of your splendour; I cast you to the ground, I laid you before kings that they might gaze at you. (18) "You defiled the sanctuary by the multitude of your iniquities, by the iniquity of your trading; Therefore, I brought fire from your midst; it devoured you, and I turned you to ashes upon the earth in the sight of all who saw you.”

The current heavens have also been defiled by sin, and that is the reason why God will destroy them. The only difference between the defiling of the earth and the defiling of the heavens is that whereas a man defiled the earth, it was an angel that defiled the heavens. More specifically, it was the angel Lucifer, the anointed cherub that defiled the heavens with his sin. In the above passage of scripture, the Holy Spirit reveals to us the truth that Lucifer defiled the sanctuary. Although most bible translations speak of Lucifer defiling his own sanctuaries, this passage actually refers to the sanctuary of God in heaven. This is why God says that because of Lucifer’s sin, God cast him out as a profane thing out of the mountain of God. The mountain of God is in fact the temple of God in heaven. You will recall that our Lord said that He saw Satan fall like lightening from heaven (Luke 10:18).
