Nevertheless I tell you the truth. It is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I depart, I will send Him to you. And when He has come, He will convict the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: of sin, because they do not believe in Me; of righteousness, because I go to My Father and you see Me no more; of judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged.
(John 16:7-11)
In the above passage of Scripture, our Lord Jesus reveals that Satan has already been judged, as “the ruler of this world” refers to the devil. Unlike the rest of God’s enemies, who are still awaiting judgment, Satan’s judgment has already been pronounced.
"Your heart was lifted up because of your beauty; You corrupted your wisdom for the sake of your splendour; I cast you to the ground, I laid you before kings, That they might gaze at you. "You defiled your sanctuaries By the multitude of your iniquities, By the iniquity of your trading; Therefore I brought fire from your midst; It devoured you, And I turned you to ashes upon the earth In the sight of all who saw you. All who knew you among the peoples are astonished at you; You have become a horror, And shall be no more forever." ' "
(Ezekiel 28:17-19)
"How you are fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! How you are cut down to the ground, You who weakened the nations! For you have said in your heart: 'I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God; I will also sit on the mount of the congregation On the farthest sides of the north; I will ascend above the heights of the clouds, I will be like the Most High.' Yet you shall be brought down to Sheol, To the lowest depths of the Pit. "Those who see you will gaze at you, And consider you, saying: 'Is this the man who made the earth tremble, Who shook kingdoms, Who made the world as a wilderness And destroyed its cities, Who did not open the house of his prisoners?'
(Isaiah 14:12-17)
Who judged Satan, and what judgment has been pronounced on him? The above passages of Scripture reveal that God has judged Satan, and the judgment pronounced is that God will bring fire from his midst to devour him. Thus, Satan will not only be cast into the lake of fire but will also be consumed by fire from within. These passages also indicate that in the future ages to come, the Lord’s saints will look upon the devil and his eternal torment. When we discuss the design of the New Jerusalem later in the series, we will explore how God will make this possible.
Now when the thousand years have expired, Satan will be released from his prison and will go out to deceive the nations which are in the four corners of the earth, Gog and Magog, to gather them together to battle, whose number is as the sand of the sea. They went up on the breadth of the earth and surrounded the camp of the saints and the beloved city. And fire came down from God out of heaven and devoured them. The devil, who deceived them, was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone where the beast and the false prophet are. And they will be tormented day and night forever and ever. Then I saw a great white throne and Him who sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away. And there was found no place for them.
(Revelation 20:7-11)
On the day of judgment, when all of God’s creation stands before His throne to be judged, three individuals will be absent: the beast (Antichrist), the false prophet, and Satan. They will not be present because their judgments will have already been pronounced. As revealed in the above passage of Scripture, all three will have been cast into the lake of fire and brimstone for eternity. The beast and the false prophet will be the first two cast into that lake, followed by Satan one thousand years later. My series The Millennial Kingdom explores this event in greater detail.
