In this section, we will specifically look at the new earth and not the New Jerusalem. For although God will place the New Jerusalem on the new earth, as we will see later in this series, in a number of points, the New Jerusalem and the new earth will also be completely different from each other.
Revelation 21:10-16 “And he carried me away in the Spirit to a great and high mountain, and showed me the great city, the holy Jerusalem, descending out of heaven from God, … (16) The city is laid out as a square; its length is as great as its breadth. And he measured the city with the reed: twelve thousand furlongs. Its length, breadth, and height are equal.”
One of the first things we notice about the new earth is its immense size. The highest mountain on this current earth is Mount Everest, which is almost nine kilometres high. In the above passage of scripture, the Holy Spirit reveals to us that the mountain of God, i.e. Mount Zion, is two thousand four hundred kilometres high, which makes it two hundred and sixty seven times higher than Mount Everest. Obviously, the mountain of God will be the highest mountain on the new earth. And so, based on a comparison between the highest mountain on earth today and the highest mountain on the new earth, we can see that the new earth will be no less than the size of the planet Jupiter, which is the largest planet in our current solar system. In other words, the new earth will be approximately three hundred times the size of the earth today. Some have looked at the height of the New Jerusalem mentioned in the above passage, and have foolishly limited God by trying to place it onto an earth equal in size to the current earth, which obviously makes it completely disproportionate in size to the earth that we currently dwell in. However, just as God is able to make the New Jerusalem the size it is, so He is also well able to make the new earth of a comparable size.
