In this section, we will be discussing the phenomenon of people experiencing convulsions, as they encounter the power of the supernatural. There is a vast difference between trembling and being convulsed. As with all the phenomena discussed in this section, there are potentially different types of manifestations that can occur in this area as well, i.e. people pretending to be convulsed by the power of God and people being convulsed from a demonic power. However, unlike all the phenomena discussed thus far, this is one of the manifestations that have nothing to do with the Holy Spirit. For there is no biblical evidence of this type of manifestation being attributed to the Holy Spirit, and in fact all biblical evidence clearly reveals that God the Holy Spirit is not the one responsible for convulsing people. So what does it mean when the scripture describes individuals as being convulsed? The word “convulse” means to shake uncontrollably or violently, to go into spasms, to shudder, to jerk or thrash about. When we discuss the demonic manifestations in this area we will see that that is exactly what unclean spirits make people do, i.e. they make people shake uncontrollably or violently, go into spasms, shudder, and jerk and thrash about.
