The Lord’s return to the Mount of Olives

Zechariah 14:3-15 “Then the Lord will go forth and fight against those nations, as He fights in the day of battle. (4) And in that day His feet will stand on the Mount of Olives, which faces Jerusalem on the east. And the Mount of Olives shall be split in two, from east to west, making a very large valley; half of the mountain shall move toward the north and half of it toward the south. … (12) And this shall be the plague with which the Lord will strike all the people who fought against Jerusalem: Their flesh shall dissolve while they stand on their feet, their eyes shall dissolve in their sockets, and their tongues shall dissolve in their mouths. (13) It shall come to pass in that day that a great panic from the Lord will be among them. Everyone will seize the hand of his neighbor, and raise his hand against his neighbor's hand; (14) Judah also will fight at Jerusalem. And the wealth of all the surrounding nations shall be gathered together: Gold, silver, and apparel in great abundance. (15) Such also shall be the plague on the horse and the mule, on the camel and the donkey, and on all the cattle that will be in those camps. So, shall this plague be.”

In the above quoted passage of scripture the Holy Spirit through the prophet Zechariah reveals to us that when our Lord Jesus returns to the earth He will stand on the Mount of Olives. This is the same mountain of Olivet from which our Lord ascended when He was taken up into heaven after His resurrection from the dead (Acts 1:9-12). You will recall that earlier we saw that at the outset of the great tribulation that the nation of Israel would be invaded by the Antichrist and the surrounding Muslim nations (Zechariah 14:2). The above quoted passage of scripture is a continuation of that prophecy, in that the Holy Spirit reveals to us that those same nations that will invade Israel will be judged by our Lord Jesus when He returns to the earth. It is at that time that the battle of Armageddon will take place. This passage gives us a vivid account of what will happen to the followers of Satan and the Antichrist on that day, for when our Lord speaks His word over them their flesh will dissolve while they stand on their feet, their eyes will dissolve in their sockets, and their tongues will dissolve in their mouths. This event will herald the start of our Lord Jesus reign on the earth for one thousand years.
