Psalms 88:4-7 “I am counted with those who go down to the pit; I am like a man who has no strength, (5) Adrift among the dead, Like the slain who lie in the grave, Whom You remember no more, And who are cut off from Your hand. (6) You have laid me in the lowest pit, in darkness, in the depths. (7) Your wrath lies heavy upon me, and You have afflicted me with all Your waves. Selah”
After Jesus died on the cross, His suffering did not end there, for He then descended into the lowest pit of hell to pay the price for the sins of the world. Jesus taught us this truth when He said, “as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the great fish, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth” (Matthew 12:40). The above passage of scripture quoted from the Psalms; gives us further insight into the torment that Jesus suffered in the lowest pit of hell, as He incurred the wrath of God for the sins of the world, for every transgression and disobedience committed by men, had to receive their just reward and none could go unaccounted for (Hebrews 2:2).
Romans 4:23-25 “Now it was not written for his sake alone that it was imputed to him, (24) but also for us. It shall be imputed to us who believe in Him who raised up Jesus our Lord from the dead, (25) who was delivered up because of our offenses, and was raised because of our justification.”
At the end of three days and three nights, Jesus had finally paid the price for every sin laid upon Him, and so God could then raise His Son from the dead. The apostle Paul teaches us that particular truth in the above passage of scripture, for he says that Jesus was delivered up for our offences which we understand to mean that Jesus suffered for our sins. But the scripture goes on to say that Jesus was raised up because of our justification. In other words, because every transgression and disobedience had been accounted for, mankind had now been justified, and so Jesus could then be raised from the dead.
