Romans 6:7-10 “For he who has died has been freed from sin. … (10) For the death that He died, He died to sin once for all; but the life that He lives, He lives to God.”
In this section, we are still discussing how God has dealt with our sin through the sacrifice of His Son. The apostle Paul, in the above passage of scripture teaches us the truth that those who die in this life, have been freed from sin. So what does it mean to be freed from sin? It means that those who die are freed from the power of sin, and that sin no longer has dominion over them, for sin only has power over men in this life. And so, while most believers understand this truth as it pertains to those who die and go to heaven, for there is no sin in heaven, not many understand this truth as it pertains to those who die and go to hell, for most believers think that those who die and go to hell, continue in sin there. However, that is not true; for as there is no sin in heaven, neither is there any sin in hell. Rather there is remorse, weeping and gnashing of teeth in hell, as those who are there are tormented for their sins committed in this life. Our Lord Jesus taught us that truth in the account given to us about the rich man that died and went to Hades (Luke 16:23-31). For in the account, we see that man only showing remorse for his sins, and not only that, but also concern for his brothers that they should repent and not end up in the same place of torment that he was in. For when men are judged on their day of judgement, they will only be judged for the sins that they have committed in this life (2 Corinthians 5:10). And so, as revealed to us in the above passage of scripture, when Jesus died on the cross, sin no longer had dominion over Him, because He had died to sin. But not only that, but because He died for all men, He also freed all men from sin. You say how is it possible that Jesus freed all men from sin? The answer to that question is those who believe in Christ also died with Him, and therefore they too have been freed from sin.
