2 Corinthians 1:9-10 “Yes, we had the sentence of death in ourselves, that we should not trust in ourselves but in God who raises the dead, (10) who delivered us from so great a death, and does deliver us; in whom we trust that He will still deliver us.”
The question that is then asked is what death did Jesus redeem us from? In the above passage of scripture the apostle Paul teaches us that God has delivered us from what he called, “so great a death”. So what is the great death that Paul is referring too? We know that Jesus did not redeem us from physical death, for all men still experience physical death, for the scripture says that it is appointed to all men once to die and then after that the judgement (Hebrews 9:27). In other words, physical death still has power over all men, for even though believers will be raised from the dead at the end of the age, nevertheless they still incur physical death in this life. We also know that Jesus did not redeem us from spiritual death, for all men still die spiritually as a result of their sin, for again the scriptures teach us that death spread to all men because all sinned (Romans 5:12). In other words, spiritual death still has power over all men, for even though believers are once again made alive spiritually when they are born-again, nevertheless they still incur spiritual death in this life before they are born-again.
