Revelation 11:1-2 “Then I was given a reed like a measuring rod. And the angel stood, saying, "Rise and measure the temple of God, the altar, and those who worship there. (2) But leave out the court which is outside the temple, and do not measure it, for it has been given to the Gentiles. And they will tread the holy city underfoot for forty-two months.” In the book of Revelation quoted above, our Lord Jesus gave the apostle John a vision of the temple that would be in existence before the Lord returns to the earth. At the time that John received his vision from the Lord, the second temple had already been destroyed in fulfilment of our Lord’s prophecy (Mark 13:2); for John received his vision from the Lord Jesus approximately twenty years after the second temple had already been destroyed. And so the temple in John’s vision referred to the third Jewish temple still to be built. We know that it was a physical temple that John saw in his vision, for he was given a measuring rod to measure its structure. The last part of the passage quoted, states that the gentiles will tread the holy city underfoot for forty-two months. This is referring to the period when the Anti-Christ will reign from the temple, for he has been allowed to rule for forty-two months (Revelation 13:5). Michael E.B. Maher
