Jesus took our sin and our sickness

Matthew 8:16-17 “When evening had come, they brought to Him many who were demon-possessed. And He cast out the spirits with a word, and healed all who were sick, (17) that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Isaiah the prophet, saying: "He Himself took our infirmities and bore our sicknesses.”

Our Lord Jesus not only bore all our sins, but God’s word teaches us that when He went to the cross He also bore all our sickness and disease. That biblical truth is revealed to us in the above quoted passage of scripture, which plainly tells us that our Lord Jesus took our infirmities and bore our sicknesses. All Christians have no problem believing that Jesus took all their sins, but some struggle to believe that Jesus also took their sickness. And yet that is exactly what God’s word declares.

1 Peter 2:24 “who Himself bore our sins in His own body on the tree, that we, having died to sins, might live for righteousness--by whose stripes you were healed.”

The apostle Peter teaches us in the above quoted passage of scripture that by the stripes of our Lord Jesus that we were healed. The term that he uses is past tense i.e. “were healed”. That means that all of God’s children have a right to be healed in the present tense. Again, all Christians have no problem believing the first part of this verse of scripture, i.e. that Jesus bore their sins in His own body on the tree. But many struggle to believe the second part of the same verse of scripture, i.e. by His stripes we were healed.
