Luke 21:24 “And they will fall by the edge of the sword, and be led away captive into all nations. And Jerusalem will be trampled by Gentiles until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled.” Our Lord Jesus taught us in the above passage of scripture, that from the time of the destruction of the second temple (which took place in 70 AD), that Jerusalem would be trampled by the gentiles until the times of the gentiles are fulfilled. And that is exactly what has happened, for in the year 70 AD the population of the city of Jerusalem was one hundred percent Jewish. However, after its destruction in that same year the Jewish population dropped to zero. Since that time the city of Jerusalem has been populated primarily by gentiles. However, over the centuries the Jewish population in the city has slowly increased, and presently Jews account for approximately sixty percent of Jerusalem’s population. Nevertheless a large part of Jerusalem is still occupied by gentiles. And so, even though we are seeing a diminished trampling of the city of Jerusalem by the gentiles, the times of the gentiles have not yet been fulfilled. It is only when Israel increases her territory as discussed in this section that we will also see the city of Jerusalem being fully restored to Israel once again. Michael E.B. Maher
