God replaces rulers

Daniel 5:26-31 “This is the interpretation of each word. Mene: God has numbered your kingdom, and finished it; (27) Tekel: You have been weighed in the balances, and found wanting; (28) Peres: Your kingdom has been divided, and given to the Medes and Persians." (29) Then Belshazzar gave the command, and they clothed Daniel with purple and put a chain of gold around his neck, and made a proclamation concerning him that he should be the third ruler in the kingdom. (30) That very night Belshazzar, king of the Chaldeans, was slain. (31) And Darius the Mede received the kingdom, being about sixty-two years old.”

Another way that God answers prayers for a nation’s government is in the replacement of its leaders. The context of the above quoted passage of scripture is that Daniel was interpreting the written judgement of God that He had pronounced on King Belshazzar and had inscribed on the palace wall. And so because Belshazzar had been weighed by God in the balances and had been found wanting, for he was a relatively wicked ruler, God had judged King Belshazzar and replaced him with Darius the Mede. Scripture reveals to us that Darius was a good ruler who through Daniel’s influence, eventually became a believer. And so we see that God decides how He will change a government’s direction when we pray. It may be that God just changes their hearts, or it may be that God places His own elect into positions of governmental authority thus influencing the governments of those nations in a positive way, but it may also be that God chooses to replace the individuals that are in authority with those who will govern according to His will.
