Forgiveness is essential in marriage

1 Corinthians 7:28 “But even if you do marry, you have not sinned; and if a virgin marries, she has not sinned. Nevertheless, such will have trouble in the flesh, but I would spare you.”

Let me say here, that the trap of unforgiveness is used very often by Satan in the marriage, for this is the one area that Christians are more often in close proximity to one another, than any other. Because of this close proximity, there are numerous incidents that can arise where the one spouse offends the other (both intentionally and unintentionally). It is only when the married couple walks in the flesh however, that they fall into the trap of unforgiveness. In the above quoted passage of scripture the apostle Paul warns believers that married couples can expect to have problems in the flesh.

Matthew 18:19-20 “Again I say to you that if two of you agree on earth concerning anything that they ask, it will be done for them by My Father in heaven. (20) For where two or three are gathered together in My name, I am there in the midst of them.”

The Lord intended that the prayer lives of Christian couples should be very powerful. As these two should, more than any other, be in agreement in that which they bring before the Lord in prayer. In the above quoted passage of scripture our Lord taught us that if two believers agree on earth concerning anything that they ask, it will be done for them by God the Father. And so Satan will do all in his power to disrupt the prayer life of married couples.

1 Peter 3:7 “Husbands, likewise, dwell with them with understanding, giving honour to the wife, as to the weaker vessel, and as being heirs together of the grace of life, that your prayers may not be hindered.”

In the above quoted passage of scripture the apostle Peter counsels the husband to honour his wife as being an heir together with him of the grace of life, so that his prayers may not be hindered. This scripture applies just as much to the wife in honouring her husband as being an heir together with her of the grace of life, that her prayers may not be hindered. As Christian couples grow in the Lord, and begin to walk more in the spirit and less in the flesh however, then they will find that they will fall into this trap less often as they become aware of Satan’s device of unforgiveness and no longer allow him to take advantage of them through it.
