Ministry Gifts

In Ministry Gifts, Michael E.B. Maher provides a comprehensive biblical framework for understanding the five primary ministry gifts given to the church: apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors, and teachers. He distinguishes these from function gifts (given to every believer) and spiritual gifts (manifestations of the Holy Spirit).

Maher explains that ministry gifts are sovereignly appointed by God, often before birth, and carry specific anointings and authority. Apostles rank first in importance, operating in all nine spiritual gifts, establishing churches, and receiving revelation knowledge. Prophets rank second, operating in revelation gifts (word of knowledge, wisdom, discerning of spirits) and prophecy, but they do not give personal guidance as under the Old Covenant. Evangelists rank third, anointed to preach salvation to the unsaved, often accompanied by healings and miracles. Pastors (fourth) shepherd local flocks, feed them God’s word, and lead by example. Teachers (fifth) focus on accurately expounding Scripture.

The book emphasizes that ministry gifts are for equipping the saints, edifying the body, and bringing the church to maturity. Maher warns against operating outside one’s calling, as seen in Old Testament examples of Korah and Uzziah. He also clarifies that apostles and prophets today restore lost biblical truths but do not add new doctrine. The church must recognize and receive all ministry gifts to grow properly.
