Learn to speak to the mountain

Mark 11:22-23 “So Jesus answered and said to them, "Have faith in God. (23) For assuredly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, 'Be removed and be cast into the sea,' and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that those things he says will be done, he will have whatever he says.”

As revealed in the above quoted passage of scripture, the third principle revealed in our Lord’s teaching on faith is that we have to speak to the mountain. It is significant that in this one verse of scripture that Jesus used the word “say” three times, whereas He used the word “believe” only once. Most of the time we as believers, put the emphasis on our believing, whereas in this passage Jesus put the emphasis on our speaking. Don’t misunderstand me, we have to believe, but very often our faith doesn’t work for us because we do not watch what we say. Jesus did not only teach us that we will have what we believe, He also taught us that we will have what we say. And so we see the principle that we have to speak what we believe in our hearts if we want to see it come to pass.

Jeremiah 1:12 “Then the Lord said to me, "You have seen well, for I am ready to perform My word.”

So why does God require us to speak that which we believe before it will come to pass? The Lord answers that question for us in the passage of scripture quoted above; when He tells us that He is ready to perform His word. Another translation says that He watches over His word to perform it. We have already established that as believers, our faith is in God and in His power and it is God’s power that produces the results. And so when we as believers speak God’s word over our lives, He watches over that word to perform it in our lives. In other words God releases His power through those words to bring to pass that which His word declares. For example, the Holy Spirit through the apostle Paul taught us that there are two conditions that must be met in order for one to be saved. Firstly we must believe in our hearts that God has raised Jesus from the dead, and secondly we must confess with our mouths that Jesus is Lord (Romans 10:9). And so when we meet those two conditions then God, who watches over His word to perform it, performs the miracle of the new birth in our hearts and we are saved. It is important to note however, that both conditions must be met and that it is not enough just to believe in our hearts, for unless we confess with our mouths that which we believe in our hearts, we will never be saved.
